As Stu says:

BE WARNED! These are very early builds (they still use the Photon front end template for example) so expect lots of bugs and lock-ups. And if running it summons a Demigorgon, don't say we didn't warn you! (Although if that happens, do let us know as that would be kinda cool!)

It’s been a busy week at Clodhoppers HQ, with Stu making new builds every day and several new players joining in the fun. In particular, we welcome fine player Cr0wn_Gh0ul to the mix and can’t wait to see him play reigning champion Owandza.

Meanwhile, Anthony, the game’s creator and all round clay modelling god, managed to win with both of his hands tied behind his back - yes, he won whilst AFK due to everyone else falling off ledges and throwing crazy axes at each other. The axes got super crazy this week - try them for yourself!

Watch out for my super flying axe kills,

Sillytuna (aka Alex)

AFK and still won. Grrr!

Beardy Cletus and 3d Scanning in a Garage

Make Cletus Great Again by joining Discord and Twitter and play Clodhoppers for Free!

I’ve just returned from a game event in Hong Kong where everyone is busy making their games out of… pixels. How quaint. This is how we do it:

IMG_1084.jpeg

Why has Cletus lost his head?

Yes, this is Anthony’s studio. In his garage.

So Anthony and Mal have been fooling around with scanning clay models into 3d. Without a gazillion cameras, which we can’t afford, it turns out to be quite an arduous process. We’re getting there, gradually.

With 3d scanned models, we can then start to play with players choosing between stylish hats…

… and beards. There are a lot more of these on our Discord. Totally Anthony’s fault.

Where’s my darn hat?

(the alien stole it)

What else has been going on? Ah yes, Stu decided Cletus liked sports and added a team ball game to Clodhoppers. This worked great, other than until we have 3d characters working it’s almost impossible to know who is on your team.

We’re now focusing on getting the full game loop finished, including multiple game modes and all the basic menus needed to let anyone run multiplayer games.

As always, drop by Discord to try builds, find out more, or join our chats about classic Japanese games and Amstrad CPC mods.

Bye for now, Alex.

P.S. If you’ve read this far you get an extra treat - one of our other titles, Eufloria RPG, is ready for a few game tests. Ping Terry on Discord and he’ll sneak you a build. Eufloria doesn’t use traditional pixel art either, we do like making life hard for ourselves.

Online play is go

For the last couple of months, Stu has been hard at work writing the Clodhoppers prototype in an all new engine, Quantum/Photon from Exit Games. A few days ago some lovely fans from our Discord server joined us to do the first 8 player test.

clodhoppers8players.png

Thanks to our very first streamer, V, you can see our brilliant successes and even more amazing fails on Twitch.

The best fail of all was that dead bodies could bounce around and even throw a few punches, oops. Platypus speed run expert Orandza also has videos here and here :)

If you’d like to join in the fun, keep an eye out for more tests next week in #clodhoppers on Discord. Hopefully a few less dead-alive jumping bodies this time.

What else have we been up to? Discussing adding a personalised room just for you, where you can invite your friends to play. Find out more in #clodhoppers-dev and help us decide what to work on next.

Thanks to the following for helping us through the birthing phase:

V, Orandza, _sirJames, Cloud, Murrax2, Undriel

Till next time!

Alex, Anthony, Stu and Mal :)

Clodhoppers is FREE on itch.io!

The first official Clodhoppers prototype is now available for FREE on itch!

We revealed the build yesterday at Riverside Games Night in Sheffield where several gamers got to experience the joy of lobbing crates and bombs at each other. With four players on-board for the entire night we ended up the last game there, having to ask the players for one final game just so we could get home to sleep!

Although this prototype is still extremely early, we hope it’s fun to play with a friends huddled around your telly.

Clodhoppers at Riverside Games Night 5

Clodhoppers at Riverside Games Night 5

What’s included?

First draft 2-4 player brawling, crate throwing, shotguns, bombs, and a variety of level experiments.

What isn't there yet? 99% of the game! Much of the artwork is placeholder, no audio, unrefined close combat, no online play, single weapon, no enemies, no single player, and more!

Requirements

  • Windows or OSX with game controllers
(tested with wired PS4 and XBox 360 pads)

  • A friend or friends to play with (local multiplayer only)

Also, remember we’re doing the entire development in public via our Discord.

Cletus Clay makes a big screen comeback at #gamayo

At GaMaYo in Leeds last night, Cletus returned for the first time in almost a decade!

Screenshot 2018-11-23 at 13.34.27.png

Much has changed in the intervening years. The clay may have dried and started to crumble but some things remain intact and as certain as they ever were. Catching your teammate off guard with a cheeky shotgun blast to the nether regions can draw a smile from the most sullen of faces. A crate eagerly lobbed across the screen striking a glancing blow, an over ambitious dropkick which misses the intended target but strikes happily on your friend's chin - it warmed the hearts of our players on a cold winters night in Leeds.

There were interesting talking points about the production back then too and buckets of love for the clay models and animation - such a shame Anthony Flack couldn't join us from his home in New Zealand!

IMG_0169.jpg

Showing an unfinished 10-year-old game did come with some concerns. However, we left encouraged as the zany gameplay and Hillbilly characters had lost none of their charm or potency. The spirit of Cletus endures and we continue with renewed vigor that maybe, just maybe he has a place in today's market.

One last thing. A massive thank you to Fee Laming and Jamie Sefton for organising the GaMaYo and Game Republic events and providing us with a screen the size of a skyscraper to demo on. Vital for the well being and sanity of game developers in the region. Next event in May 2019, make sure you’re there :)
